  • Rank Tracking
  • SEO Audit
  • Competitor Analysis

Both of these tools have pretty clean user interface, showing comprehensive analysis and reports.

  • SEMrush

You can have a quick analysis of your domain, giving you detail on organic keywords, traffic. You can also find quick links like Project Reports, Marketing analysis on left side.

Another good feature here is that you can have a quick descriptions of the term if you hover your mouse on them. This is quite handy for someone new to blogging. Something like the pic below

  • Ahrefs

When compared to SEMrush, Ahrefs has less complicated interface. This is good for someone who wants things to be less clusstered and smooth.

Ahrefs also has the hover tool which gives description on terms shown in the screen.

Score Table - So for User Interface, both of them are good. So I had given 4 star to each.

KEYWORD RESEARCH

  • SEMrush

SEMrush has more than 18 billion keyword for google. This gives you an extensive list of keyword suggestion on anything you type in the Keyword Magic Tool. You get a lot of data including CPC, volume, keyword phrase suggestion and related keywords in the same window, which is very useful.

  • Ahrefs

Ahref also gives similar information as SEMrush, but in addition it also gives how many click each keyword gets.

Many a time, when you search on google, you get instant answer to it. So in that case, there is no need to click any website or open its pages. For instance, if you search “Leonardo Dicarprio age”, or “inch to cm”, google snippets will have answers to it. In that case you can avoid focusing on those keywords.

Score Table - Based on this feature Ahrefs gets one star higher than SEMrush.

RANK TRACKING

Rank tracking is very helpful in deciding what works for your website. Based on the changes you made, you can track if it help in ranking higher or not. This helps in understanding your position in search engine.

  • SEMrush

SEMrush offers daily updates and mobile rankings. In addition, there are lots of SERP features available along with intuitive reports.

  • Ahrefs

Rank tracking features in Ahrefs is usually limited in one single page. This feature is also incredibly useful in ahrefs but it updates rank tracking in weekly basis (or 3 days period) when compare to SEMrush which updates everyday.

Score Table - For frequent update SEMrush gets one more star then Ahrefs.

SEO AUDIT

  • SEMrush

SEMrush audit your website in only few minutes and provides you with errors, warning and suggestions which improves your site SEO and as result improves your ranking too.

  • Ahrefs

The SEO audit tool in Ahref is not as intuitive as SEMrush. Moreover, it takes much longer time in crawling your website to provide these data.

Score Table - SEMrush perform better when compared to Ahrefs in providing more detailed report in quick time.

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS

  • SEMrush

Competitor analysis is a very strong feature and provides you with limitless opportunities by peeking your competitor for keyword suggestions, backlinks and ranking in search engine. The keyword gap feature and market analysis tool has a strong edge over Ahrefs.

  • Ahrefs

Ahrefs also provides valuable information through its competing domain feature. However, it lacks content recommendations and other power features provided by SEMrush.

Score Table - SEMrush is a clear winner here, without a doubt.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

  • SEMrush

They have strong link building features. When you subscribe to SEMrush, then you are provided with several other kits such as PPC Keyword Tool, CPC Map, Social Media Planner, Social Media Poster.

  • Ahrefs

The click metric feature is unique to Ahrefs. With Ahref, its just the SEO tools which is provided with the $99 plan.

Score Table - SEMrush seems to provide more tools that can help you plan a winning strategy to improve your blog ranking.

PRICING PLANS

Both SEMrush and Ahref has similar plans

  • SEMrush
  • Ahrefs

Concluding Remarks

Although both of these tools are equally good. I found that SEMrush has a little edge over Ahrefs in providing much better competitor tools and a large set of keywords that are constantly updated.

Moreover, I found that the site audit features provided by them have turned out to be the turning point in my blogging career. After spending 6 months on my blog, I was frustrated as it was not giving me any earning and I had struggled hard to get traffic.

But I happen to read a detail blog on SEMrush and decide to give it a try. I used their site audit feature and found out that my site had 500+ errors. Over the next few months, I worked on them one by one. And now

My blog ranks

  • 1,80,000 on Alexa global rank
  • I get 10k traffic per day
  • Make 50,000 + INR per month

Pls, note that I am a full-time research scholar and is mostly occupied with my lab and experiments.
